Adult Concert Series programs
October 2025 SFCE turns 15 Featuring music written for the SFCE by Broward, Dade, and Florida composers, including Fred Glesser, Charles Reskin, Bethany Trainor, Myrna Meeroff, Shawn Crouch, Steve Landis, Paul Basler, Charles Norman Mason and Emily Kennedy. Includes images from Broward 1o0, a silent film about the Stranahan family, and Ros Gilman’s Progress, a multimedia exhibition in partnership with Water Aid US and UK.
November 2025: Veteran’s Day Concert is a partnership with ALBA (Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives) Services in remembrance of SFCE supporter and Veteran Chatman Talley and ALBA board member Peter Carrol (1943-2024) featuring music by American Veterans and stories of Broward veterans set to music.
December 2025- Christmas on Broadway featuring holiday music from Broadway musicals including Mame, The Lemon Drop Kid, The Grinch, Meet Me in St. Louis, and more. Can you name the films that use the holiday music you know and love?
January- 2026 Let Freedom Sing is a program of songs, spirituals, operas and theater works that uplift the human voice. Music by Harry Burleigh, Harry Lawrence Freeman, Scott Joplin, William Grant Still, and more, paired with an exhibition of artwork of Florida artist Edward Taylor.
February 2025 President’s Day features music written by American Presidents, including Ben Franklin’s string quartet, Hail to the Chief, written for John Quincy Adams, music inspired by Presidents, including Mr. President by Randy Newman, Ronnie Talk to Russia by Prince, Eisenhower Blues by Elvis Costello, Tippecanoe and Tyler Too, and Gershwin’s political musical Of Thee I Sing .
March 2025 The Women of the Civil War- learn about the contribution of women the war with music by Lady Mary Dering, Clara Gottschalk, Eliza Pattiani, Virginia Gabriel, Maria Hester Park John Knowles Paine, and more.
April 2024 The Underground Railroad features stories about abolitionists and music used on the Underground Railroad. Includes works by Margaret Bonds, John Coltrane, Victor Hugo, African American Spirituals and more.
May 2025 All that Jazz- The music of American jazz composers including Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Mary Lou Williams and more.
June 2025 – Americans and the Silver Screen- a program of the film music by American composers including Jurassic Park, The Godfather, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Star Wars, Superman, Titanic, Back to the Future and more.
July 2025- Born on the 4th of July- patriotic music by American composers- Patriotic music including Stars and Stripes Forever, Washington Post, This is My Country, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Born in the USA, Living in America and more.
August 2025 American composers concert features music American composers including, Amy Beach and the rest of the Boston 6, Frank Ticheli, Bernstein, John Adams, Philip Glass, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Scott Joplin, Amy Beach, Margaret Bonds, Gottschalk, John Cage, Florence Price and more.
Season 15 Family Concert Series
This concert series includes the reading of an American story in 6 panels. Participants draw and color as they listen to the music from each panel. There is a dance break in the middle of each program to give the children an opportunity for movement and so that they can learn and dance a traditional dance, create a musical instrument and perform it with the SFCE musicians. The storyboards are collected and scored to evaluate monthly and overall improvement in reading comprehension and fine motor skills.

November 2025 Tears from the Sky- An original story by Myrna Meeroff about the coming of the final world of the Hopi Nation
December 2025 The Gingerbread Man- The American holiday story about a gingerbread man that no one can catch
January 2026 The Wizard of Oz- An American story by L. Frank Baum
February 2026 Can Dr. King Sing? An original story by Myrna Meeroff about the Civil Rights Movement
March 2026 Otoonah A traditional Inuit/Alaskan story of a girl who is stranded in the snow
April 2026 Brer Rabbit An African American tale of a small and clever rabbit
May 2026 Hiiaka- The story of two Hawaiian goddesses who love the same man.
June 2026 Viva Musica An original story by Myrna Meeroff about the history of Florida
July 2026 Calamity Jane The story of an American frontierswoman and sharpshooter
August 2026 Treemonisha- An original opera by Scott Joplin about an African American girl who believes education is the key to a successful future.
